EO4GEO: Towards an innovative strategy for skills development and capacity building in the space geo-information sector

News | 18-05-18

The EO4GEO Sector Skills Alliance aims at reducing the skills gap between the supply and demand of education and training in the Space/geospatial sector, as well as supporting the use of Copernicus data and services.

The project gathers 26 partners, most of which are part of the Copernicus Academy network. Activities kicked-off in January 2018 and will run until December 2021.

The Alliance is now looking for associated members!

Technological progress and globalisation are changing and disrupting many sectors, including the Space and geospatial industry. Although this sector offers unprecedented opportunities for innovation, growth and jobs, there are gaps (i.e. missing skills) and mismatches between supply and demand of specialists. Some 40% of Global employers struggle to find the adequate people to hire, according to the Manpower Group. Consequently, both the public and the private sector calling for action, and the EU is responding with, among other initiatives, the Blueprint for Sectoral Cooperation on Skills. As part of this strategic framework, five Blueprint projects were selected to promote cooperation between key stakeholders in specific sectors. Today, Copernicus Observer is featuring the project covering the Space and geo information industry.

The EO4GEO project is an alliance for sectoral cooperation dedicated to skills development and capacity building in the Space and geo information sector which in turn supports the Copernicus programme to unleash its full potential in terms of benefits for the EU economy and for its citizens. EO4GEO aims “to improve the use of Copernicus data and services by helping to bridge the gap between the skills demand and supply in the fields of Earth Observation and Geographic Information”. As explained by Milva Carbonaro, EO4GEO project coordinator.
